Kathmandu, Kartik 1 – The Election Commission has asked to give priority to women in the by-elections for the head and deputy head of the local level, which is going to be held on the 16th of the month. The Commission has given instructions to political parties to make women candidates.
The Commission has directed political parties to make women candidates in the by-elections for the vacant posts of Chairman or Vice-Chairman of Village Municipality, Chief or Deputy Chief of Municipality and Chief or Deputy Chief of District Coordination Committee.
The Commission has given this direction as per Section 67 of the Local Tehsil Election Act, 2073. Commission’s Information Officer Suman Ghimire gave information about this. He said that there is no clear provision for this situation in the law. By-elections will be held in accordance with the spirit of the law. The Commission has given instructions to make women candidates in the by-elections for vacant posts of men at the local level.
The Local Tehsil Election Act has made it mandatory for a political party to make candidature of a woman for one of the two posts while giving candidature for the post of Chief or Deputy Chief of the local Tehsil. But such arrangement is not mandatory in giving candidature for only one post out of two.
